The defence starts at noon in lecture hall E. Note that the normal lecture season is started and campus is filled with freshmen. Finding a parking spot might be difficult. Also if you know me personally you sit on rows 2 and 3. If you know me professionally you sit on rows 4 and 5. (If you sit further than row 5 you are not coming to the dinner.) There is an introductory lecture by me, roughly 20 minutes in Finnish. Followed by a lecture from the opponent in English. After that the opponent goes through the thesis by asking questions in English. If the opponent is happy with the answers, I am granted the degree of Doctor of Science. The total duration is about two hours. Outside the lecture hall is a toasting with sparkling wine and coffee and cake is served. This is the time if you want to visit the campus, offices etc.

The dinner starts at 18.00 in mestaritalli. The location is in Töölö, north from Hietalahti shore. There is a welcoming drink and a speech, followed by a formal three course meal: artichoke soup, grilled trout and vanilla pudding. After main course there are speeches, started by me and followed by speeches by everyone I mention by name in my speech in that order. After formal speeches are the free speeches including voluntary graduation gifts with or without speeches. If you want to give something, good gifts are trees and sheep. The formal part ends to coffee, cheese and cognac. (The afterparty is tentatively planned to be on the terrace of the same restaurant Mestaritalli if the weather permits. It might be too cold in September.)
